Put aside some time every day for family and friends
We all know how a good laugh with friends or a cry on your mom's shoulder can solve a problem, so draw on the support from those around you to work through any difficult times. Make sure you develop and nurture close relationships with partners, friends, family and the wider community. It’s easy – take that extra 10 minutes to stop in at your mum’s on the way home from work just to say hello, or invite your neighbour over for that cup of coffee you've been talking about over the fence for ages.
Discover an interest, or a passion
Buy a canvas and try your hand at a bit of oil painting, join a team sport you've been wanting to try for ages, go and volunteer… Absorbing an interest is very satisfying and can distract you from things that may cause you to stress. You never know, it may lead to a new and exciting adventure for you. It’s also exercise for your brain!
Keep moving
We know the benefits of exercise – releasing those great endorphins, getting those toned arms you've always wanted – but it is, by far, the best form of stress relief! It distracts your mind from those stressful thoughts that bother you, and gives you a sense of achievement. Make sure you chose something you enjoy and that suits your lifestyle – you don’t want one that will just create more stress. Did you know that aerobic exercises are great for anxiety while resistance exercises may work better if you’re feeling a bit depressed…
Smart eating
Well-balanced, healthy!! EVERYTHING IN MODERATION, don’t starve yourself, or cut out the things you love – that just makes things worse. Try some Mediterranean-style foods – veggies, fruit, whole grains, nuts, fish – this has been linked to less depression!
Positive thinking
Look on the bright side of life!! I know this is easier said than done, but if you tend to get anxious and depressed over a situation, just think – will this matter in 1 years’ time? on a scale of 1-10, (in the broader scheme of things) how bad is this really? This may offer a new outlook, change your way of thinking and enhance your mood.
LASTLY… Here is a handy breathing technique that will help when you feel a bit stressed:
BLOW OUT FIRST
Once your lungs are completely empty, take a deep breath in and completely fill them again, hold 1 2 3, then breath out sloooowllyyy… do this 3 times, with each repeat slow the breathing down. This stops your brain, and then very quickly rushes blood and oxygen to every part of your body.
This small and simple exercise takes a couple of minutes, and will help you feel calmer and more relaxed.
Yours in Health and Happiness,
